Intricate Bay, as its name suggests, is a compilation of scattered islands and intricate waterways that connect the Copper River to the south side of Lake Iliamna. This unique topography creates miles of protected channels for kayakers to explore. Nesting loons, scavenging brown bears, pods of migrating salmon, and the occasional moose are common sights as you paddle through the heart of Inticate Bay, not to mention wildflowers scattered along untouched shorelines and volcanic peaks looming in the distance.
Spend a day walking along small streams while watching bears fish for salmon, hike over open tundra to a scenic vista, or trek down a trail to access the rugged coast of Cook Inlet. There are unlimited ways to stretch your legs while experiencing the region.
There is no better way to spend a day than peacefully floating down a small stream in the middle of the Alaska Bush while photographing bears or catching a rainbow trout on a fly rod. We don't float for the thrill of white water, as most of our streams are very mild-flowing, but we do utilize the rafts to get you places that are otherwise inaccessible by boat, plane or foot. We'll drop you, your guide and your raft off where any number of rivers flow out of a lake, and pick you up at the bottom.
With our 23' cabin cruiser we can plan drop-offs and pick-ups kayaking or photography trips that are beyond reach of Intricate Bay, or spend the day cruising the shoreline of Lake Iliamna. At nearly 100 miles long, 20 miles wide, and up to 1,000 feet deep, Lake Iliamna is Alaska's largest lake, and among the largest freshwater bodies of water in the United States. The lake is home to the United States' only population of freshwater seals, and we are located within a short ride of several islands and beaches where they frequent. This is a unique opportunity to view and photograph Iliamna's seals while enjoying unobstructed views of the Alaska Range.
Naynach'en Lodge is located at the mouth of the Copper River, one of Alaska's first "fly fishing only" rivers. Though we are not a dedicated fishing lodge, we are in the heart of Lake Iliamna and Katmai National Park fly fishing waters, and most of our day trips are on rivers and streams perfect for casting a fly for rainbow trout. If there is an angler in your group, we can accommodate.
